Message: Eventhough I never meet Manny, he was a great influence on me in becoming a firefighter. A year after the terrorist attack, a local community college program (Upward Bound)organized a cultural educational study tour to New York. One of the stops was at ground zero and followed by a visit to Engine Co. 5's quarters on 14th St. There we were welcomed by fellow firefighters and by Manny's family members. We were given a speech on how great of a guy and how brave Manny was. Those words got engraved in my heart and it was then that I decided that saving lives was something I wanted to do. I was only 17 then, fresh out of high school. Immediately after returning I started looking for classes that would lead me in that direction. By age 18 I was an EMT-I OS. At 19, I started volunteering at the Calexico Fire Dept. Now, I'm 20, I just graduated from Class I of the Imperial County/IVC Fire Academy. There were times when academy was hard, I didn't now if I could do it; but i thought of Manny and how he never left anything for another day and that helped me push harder. Formaly, I'm testing to get hired as a full time Firefighter at Calexico Fire. A day after 9/11 of this year was my agility test, and giving me that extra strength to complete the test was that man who I never meet, but I feel like I do. Manuel eventhough I never meet you, I want to let you know that you inspired me in becoming what I am today: A Firefighter. THANK YOU
